this was tested at least for ubuntu 9.04, 9.10 and 10.04 (jaunty, karmic, lucid). start "applications - accessories - terminal". if there is no panel at all, use <alt>-<f2> and type "gnome-terminal".

gconftool --recursive-unset /apps/panel
pkill gnome-panel
