UNCLAIMED Wireless Network controller [0280]: Atheros Communications Inc. Device [168c:002e] (rev 01) - no driver installed for AR9287 Wireless Network Adapter on Sony VAIO using Ubuntu 9.10 - using kernel version 2.6.31-14-generic

Asked by William Pretty

I recently installed Ubuntu 9.10 - Karmic Koala on my new Sony VAIO system. Model number VPCF111FD/B
It has the new 64bit Intel i7 processor.

1) The headphones work but no sound comes out the speakers.

2) I doesn't appear to have found the wireless adapter. It was turned on during install.

Could it be that this machine is too new to to be supported by 9.10 ??

you may need to install a wireless driver

in system >adminin.>wireless driver do you have any options

also on the preference or second mouse gesture on the widget for volume

can you make sure under preferences your front speaker sound is not muted

if this is not an option youll need to install pulse or similar driver for your system

hope that helps check back and someone can give you more instructions if that doesnt

do it

dont give up !! your almost there

Thanks for getting back so quick :)

Under "system>administration" there is no entry for a wireless driver.
Under "Hardware Drivers" it searches for drivers but all it finds is an NVIDIA driver for the display.

As for the sound I think I may have it fixed. I'll have to put some wave files or mp3's to test it.

Bill

Hi Bill,

Please first connect your network card to the wireless router using an ethernet cable (also known as a LAN cable).

In order to gather essential troubleshooting information about your wireless card, please follow this procedure:

Step 1: Open Terminal from "Applications->Accessories->Terminal"

Step 2: Please copy-paste the following command from the https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu website in Firefox into the Linux Terminal. Do NOT copy-paste from the Email message into the Terminal, as that will only copy PART of the command. The command STARTS with the word sudo and ENDS with the word restart. So please copy-paste the ENTIRE command below from Firefox into a Terminal, press <enter>, then enter password when sudo asks for password, then press enter again.

Tip: If you have a wheel mouse or 3 button mouse you do not need to type commands into the Terminal. Highlight the command written on the page. Move your cursor anywhere in the Terminal and press the wheel or middle button. Automatic Copy and paste! No spelling mistakes! No Typos! No other errors!

sudo lshw -C network; sudo iwlist scanning; cat /etc/network/interfaces; cat /etc/lsb-release; lspci -nn; lsusb; sudo lshw -short; uname -a; dmesg | grep ound; dmesg | grep b43; dmesg | grep wl; dmesg | grep witch; iwconfig; grep b43 /etc/modprobe.d/*; grep wl /etc/modprobe.d/*; sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart

Step 3: Please post results (copy/paste terminal output) on this thread. The troubleshooters here need to see the full Terminal output from running the above command.

Regards,

Mark

I suggest the following procedure:

1. Upgrade from 2.6.31-14-generic to the newest Karmic (Ubuntu 9.10) kernel (version 2.6.31-21-generic) using these commands and using a WIRED Internet connection:

sudo aptitude update

sudo aptitude dist-upgrade

2. Then install extra wireless drivers using this command:

sudo aptitude install linux-backports-modules-wireless-karmic-generic

3. Then reboot and retest wireless.

Thanks Mark;

However I recently had a problem with the grub2 boot loader. The default image was either incorrect or damaged so I had to edit grub2 (following the instructions on this forum) so that it would boot 2.6.31-14-generic. I did this by booting from the Ubuntu 9.10 install CD. Will "sudo apt update' not scrfew up grub again. I think the image that wouldn't boot was 2.6.31-21-generic ...

If the commands I gave you, screw up grub, then you already had a broken Ubuntu install and should reinstall Ubuntu from scratch anyway......

For me and many others, those commands I gave you are safe to use......

Hi Mark;

Did what you said. apt update commands appeared to work. The laptop booted OK, no problems with grub.
Unfortunately still no wireless adapter. When I right click on the task bar option ans select Edit Connections,
there is no device shown under the Wireless tab, like the wireed tab which shows eth0.

Looks like the laptop is just too new :( I might try plugging a supported adapter into one of the USB ports ...

Hi,

I think the next step should be to boot from an Ubuntu 10.04 LiveCD session and test wireless during the 10.04 LiveCD session. If wireless works there, then do a clean install of Ubuntu 10.04 (not a WUBI install, but a dual-boot install, if you are also running Windows on the same pc)

Regards,

Mark

Hi Mark;

I tried what you said. I downloaded the "10.04-desktop-i386" image and booted from the CD.
It still can't find the wireless adapter. I have access to several Linux compatible USB adapters
so I think I'll try one of them ...

Bill

Here is a list of Ubuntu compatible wireless cards:

http://ubuntuhcl.org/browse/search?offset=0&category=25&manufacturer=&rating=5&price=&os=1&order-by=rating-desc&worksoutofthebox=on&keywords=

The ASUS WL-167G V2 (USB ID 0b05:1723) wireless USB stick is a good choice.

Bought one on EBay and plugged it in. Worked like a charm out of the box :)

Thanks ...
