Hard Drive Problem

Asked by Akhil

Hai,
I have got a spare hard drive whis is not able to mount by ubuntu.
I belive that the problem is with the hard drive(having bad sectors) and not ubuntu since it failed to mount on my friends computer who are using other versions of ubuntu and windows.
My current os is Ubuntu 8.10. Is there any software for ubuntu that can repaire bad sectors of my hdd and i want to do a low level disk format.
Please help me.
Thanks in Advance...

You don't repair bad sectors. They're mapped and then avoided.

You can wipe an entire drive with:
dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sdb
Where /dev/sdb might need to be changed to match your connected drive. Be careful that this is correct or you may end up wiping the wrong hard drive.

If your drive is unmountable on that many computers, it may just be dead, in which case you're not going to be able to fix it at all.

Hi :)

This guide might have some advice
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/DataRecovery

Professional data recovery services tend to have special hardware (such as special read/write heads) to help them & it might be worth paying for some local company to do this.

Make sure you get an estimate before giving it too them because it is usually very expensive. Also, even if notices say that they only deal with Windows they probably would give a discount for linux drives as they are so much easier. If you mention linux and they still want to charge the same then try elsewhere as they really might not know what they are doing after all.

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)
