Are you trying to install using Synaptic Package Manager (System->Administration->Synaptic Package Manager)? I see 'mysql-server' and 'mysql-client' both listed... do they fail to install?

Sorry, should have added that you may have to start it as a service as well, once you have it installed. Go to 'System->Preferences->Startup Applications' and make sure that it's running in the first place before you try to use it. From there you should be able to type 'mysql -u root mysql' to get the gui up with default settings. Let me know if you need more after that.
