cannot install ubuntu on laptop

Asked by David Tingfah

 I’ve been unable to install Ubuntu version (9.10 i386)

Trying to install onto Laptop: Dell Inspiron (Model: E1705)
32 BIT.
Windows XP / Service Pack 3
T2500 @ 2.00 GHz, 1.99GB of RAM

Have tried to install using 3 step process recommended on www.ubuntu.com website, (download, burn ISO disc (using Infra Recorder software), and restart to install)

After error message, have uninstalled, and attempted reinstall multiple times -due to following error message:
Permission denied..
I have made possible determination that the following incorrect architecture instances may be preventing successful installation:

04-23 05:54 DEBUG Distro: wrong arch: i386 != amd64

04-24 16:19 DEBUG Distro: wrong arch: i386 != amd64

Verified MD5 / Directory were correct, and all checks out there.

Seems like it is the wrong version for my laptop.
Any ideas?

Did you check the CD for defects?
have you tried some boot options?

Hi :)

Please try downloading again. It sounds as tho you have accidentally downloaded the 64bit version rather than the 32bit. Try the big green button on this page
http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download

Once you have downloaded the iso file it is a good idea to check it's md5sum to make sure it worked well
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToMD5SUM
This is a lot easier than it sounds!

Then try booting up from the Cd, this guide can help if you have any trouble with this.
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/LiveCD
Note that the cheapest blank Cds are best for making a bootable Cd. I think expensive ones are optimised for data storage instead.

Don't worry about trying to install it until after you have tried the LiveCd as a demo of Ubuntu first.
Good luck and regards from
Tom :)
