Lucid KDE cannot start session

Asked by Lutz Jänicke

I have just upgraded my Ubuntu 9.10 to 10.04-RC.
Since this upgrade I no longer can start KDE sessions. I can log into KDM and the splash screen appears but the animation is killed before it is finished. Then the login tune is played and the screen stays with the background shown. No menu bar, no right mouse click menus. In most cases (but not always) it is possible to use shortcuts like ALT-F2 or ALT-CTRL-DEL.
I already have created a new user with a blank home directory for testing with the same result.

The process list shows a <defunct> nepomukserver.

Any ideas on how to track down the problem? Shall I rather post a bug report and append the .xession-errors?

Hardware:
* Lenovo X200 with Intel graphics (latest xorg with the memory leak fixed)
* 3G RAM

Many thanks in advance,
    Lutz

Hi :)

It already sounds like you have more idea about this than me. I would say yes to posting a bug-report. I was hoping someone else would answer this but seems like no-one else know either!

Have you tried ubuntuforums.com and the general linux forum at
http://www.linuxquestions.org
1 of us 3 usually gets it so please post a link if you get a good answer from the other 2!

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)
