Ubuntu's default media player Totem has no default codec to play mp3/vcd/dvd format by default.
so you can install the gstreamer plugin via synaptic package manager.

(or)
You have to install vlc in your system.
For that,

By going terminal,

Applications->Accessories->Terminal

Next

type:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install vlc

the above code will install the vlc player
after installing the vlc you can watch your vcd/dvd/listen your mp3 file in your Ubuntu by going to,
Application->Sound and Video->vlc

note:
for installing the vlc you must have internet connection
