Is it possible to connect two Ubuntu computers using a USB cable?

Yes, you shouldn't need a router although one would make things a lot easier. Instead just use an ethernet cable which has slightly squarer plugs than usb. Usually newer machines can cope whichever way around the cable is made but it might be wise to ask the shop person whether you need "twisted pair" or "crossover" or "straight through". I am not sure about whether the correct technical term is "crossover" or "twisted pair".

I'm unaware of a method to do that with a USB cable.

An alternative would be to purchase a Cross-Over Network cable (a special cable that connects two ethernet ports together, that shouldn't be too expensive), then set static IP addresses on both sides.

George, it is not a USB cable. It is an ethernet cable, the one you use to connect to the router.

Easy mistake to make. Almost ALL cables seem to be usb today. Well, except the power cable, and sometimes monitor cables. Ok, so there are 2 types of cables but ALL the rest are usb, except ethenet networking cables, but ALL the rest lol

PS my dad has a usb cable that acts as a networking cable but it has some strange box in the middle of it.

PPS Yesss, crossover ethernet. That's the one :) That's the cheapest option and prolly the fastest too.

PPPS It could also be done using wireless or Bluetooth if both devices have the same one installed (otherwise it gets expensive)
