Xubuntu can't find the mouse?

Asked by pointyblue

I've just installed Xubuntu 7.04 from the alternate install iso on a 150 mhz computer with 190 mb ram and a 10 gb hd.

Amazingly, Xubuntu seems to be loading as it should but it doesn't find my mouse!?!

It's a standard 2-button ball mouse with a scroll wheel. When I run DamnSmallLinux or PuppyLinux on the computer there's no problem with the mouse - it must be Xubuntu related.

Do any of you have an idea on how to make Xubuntu find the mouse?

Hi:

can you put your /etc/X11/xorg.conf ?

Hmmm... How exactly do I do that?

Remember I'm not able to use the mouse, so I can't access the terminal.

Do you know if and how it can be done if I start Xubuntu in text mode?

press ctrl + alt + F1 and then you'll get a terminal, login.
then type nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf
there find a section begining with somthing like this:
Section "InputDevice"
 Identifier "Configured Mouse"

and paste them here.

I believe this problem has been fixed with a kernel update.
Are you using the latest kernel, did you install updates?
Please provide the output of the following command on a terminal: $ cat /proc/version_signature

When I type nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf and scroll down to Section InputDevice I get:

          Driver "wacom"
          Identifier "stylus"
          Option "Device" "/dev/input/wacom"
          Option "Type" "stylus"
          Option "ForceDevice" "ISDV4" # Tablet PC ONLY
     EndSection

It seems there's no mouse configured?

When I type cat /proc/version_signature I get:

          Ubuntu 2.6.20-15.27-generic

I've tried sudo aptitude update and sudo aptitude upgrade but this doesn't update the kernel... Is there a specific command I can use to update the kernel?

Please run the following command from a terminal an check again:
$ sudo dpkg-reconfigure -p high xserver-xorg

> Is there a specific command I can use to update the kernel
$ sudo apt-get install linux-image-generic
This package always depends on the latest kernel.

The kernel update did it! Everything is now working as it should.

Thanks for helping out!

Hello, on my Xubuntu 8.04 burned CD is a checksum error with Thunderbird from Mozilla. Is it possible to download from Mozilla a Linux version and install it afterwards? Thanks for any advise. Hardi2000
