Recovering files from Crashed disk

I have installed ubuntu already.I have check with fsck in terminal.
i have bad sectors.so i restart the system while fsck is performing its operation.after the restart the system will display GRUB 17 error. Then i go for live usb 9.10 with my flashdrive and this is not recognizing the existing file format.I think the file format is corrupted.now i want my files back.

Now how can i recover my old files from the crashed disk?

you can try a software called testdisk to recover your partitions. boot from the live usb then write in the terminal sudo apt-get install testdisk. to run testdisk simply write in the terminal sudo testdisk. you can also try photorec (installed with testdisk) to recover your files.

Hi :)

Yes, testdisk is good. The advice in this guide might help

Good luck and regards from

You might try to image the drive with the dd command, in case the disk is about to go up in smoke. Then you can try software solutions at your leisure.

This second suggestion may seem unusual in an open-source shop, but for a failing drive I have had good luck with a commercial program called SpinRite. I had a non-bootable drive that I successfully revived several times with it. It works for any file system and any OS, but you need to be able to boot from a diskette drive. You have to buy it first, but they give no-questions refunds.

Hi :)

SpinRite is supposedly excellent and is also supposed to be good for trying to prevent data loss in the first place by reinforcing data on the drive.

Supposedly it is all the work of just 1 person, in much the same way as SpyBot and annoyingly refuses to re-base onto a linux LiveCd so it does sometimes suffer from typical Windows problems.

I think the main chap needs to re-read the guidance from Free Software Foundation about what they think is a fair way to earn money in linux-land

For a start notice that is Free with a capital F, not as in "free lunch"

Moving to a more stable and secure linux based distro would make his product much better quality

PS i nearly forgot but that DataRecovery page does lead you through good steps and gives good packages worth trying. The best way to be completely sure is to use a data recovery service locally but that could cost a LOT.
