Firstly, do you have installed proprietary codecs with Medibuntu ?

Totem has no default codec to play vcd format by default.
so you can install the gstreamer plugin via synaptic package manager.
(or)
You first to install vlc in your system.
For that,

By going terminal,

Applications->Accessories->Terminal

Next

type:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install vlc

the above code will install the vlc player
after installing the vlc you can watch your vcd file in your Ubuntu.

note:
for installing the vlc you must have internet connection
