Can I run ubuntu with a Pentium III?

Since Windows 98 is no longer supported, I have to get a new operating system, which essentially means a brand new computer system enabling me to use Windows Vista. I thought that Linux could allow me to extend the life and use of my poor old Pentium III. Am I correct?

Yes, you can use xubuntu which is designed for slower computers/

I am running Ubuntu Feisty on an old Dell Dimension 4100 with a Pentium III at 866mghz and 384 Ram and it works fine, much faster than with Windows ME. But then, I am not a "gamer" .... But it handles files of 100 photos, 2.5Mo each, multiple windows opened at the same time, etc...
