Installing NAS storage

Asked by Randy

How do I install a NAS storage device in Ubuntu 7.04? I use both Windows XP Home and Ubuntu 7.04, have a Linksys WRT54G wireless router. I have both wireless and hard-wired computers connected to the router and would like to make the network storage available to both wired and wireless systems. Are there recommendations on the best NAS storage device to use with Ubuntu?

Thanks,
Randy Holt

Randy,
This really depends on you price point. I suggest Linksys NSLU2, which is cheap, and bring-your-own-external-hardrive.

Stepping up, the Synology NAS boxes are nice and as a bonus have web and media serving.

You can, of course, move up in capacity and such. Buffalo makes some nice 1TB and 2TB models.

The main consideration is that you'll need to install 'samba' on your ubuntu installation. Samba allows you to connect to windows shares, which 99% of the NAS' out there are configured for.

Can you help with this problem?
