Blank Screen when running Live CD

Asked by Shep

Hi,

I currently run a dual boot laptop with Ubuntu 7.4 and i really like the interface so i want to upgrade my desktop to single boot Ubuntu system as i am sick of vista, and ill just have my laptop with windows if i need it.

Anyway my problem is that when i go to run the live CD i just get a black screen instead of the login page.

My desktop is as follows...

Motherboard: Asus M2N4 SLI
CPU: AMD dual core 64bit 5600
GPU: 256M 8500GT Leadtek X2
2 GB RAM

I'm trying to run the 64 bit Desktop Live CD.

Do i have to change my motherboard? or Graphic cards?

Lets try first reconfiguring the video card:

1. Boot in Safe Graphics Mode
2. Reconfigure the xorg.conf file with the command:

dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg

or (supposing you know very well the characteristics of your graphics card):

dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

3. Start the server with startx or /etc/init.d/gdm start

If this doesn't work, try deleting "quiet splash" from the kernel boot line:

1. At the boot menu select your normal boot option
2. Press e to edit
3. Delete quiet and splash at the end of the line
4. Press enter to boot

Check your boot messages for indications on why the boot fails.

Cesare,

Thanks for the quick response...

Unfortuatly i get the same behaviour.

I have a feeling its a compatability issue between my motherboard and ubuntu.

If you delete quiet splash or press ALT-F1 during boot, we can see what messages are thrown at you from the kernel. They could give us some clues on how to solve it.
Or, even better, you can install from the Alternate CD.

In any case, what is the problem? You have a dual boot already, so just use the windows partition for linux and, if it annoys you, manually delete the relative grub menu entry!?
