usb external HDD not showing in windows xp

I have a 160 GB usb external HDD, formatted it using ubuntu 9.10 palimpsest disk utility in FAT filesystem so it can have full compatibility with other OS like windows xp, the drive shows in ubuntu but doesn't show in other computers using windows xp, anyone who know why is this happening?

It could be because the drive is using the GPT instead of MBR partition table. Try using the Gnome partition editor (package gparted or live cd from gparted.sf.net) to create the partition.

Once installed, select the external disk on the top right (MAKE SURE you've selected the correct disk), then select Create Partition Table, making sure the type is "msdos". Then select the "Unallocated" and click new, following the prompts to create a new FAT or NTFS partition. Once you're happy with the layout, click Apply.
