CAT/ Java installation problem

Asked by Bhikkhu Santi

I would like to install the following CAT translation facility. In the installation instructions it says that if a compatible Java thingee is installed then the file called 'OmegaT.jar' should start the install, but it doesn't. I looked in the Synaptic package manager where it seems to say that there is already a Java doobee installed, so does that mean that it's incompatible, if so what do I do?

Here's the link to the program I'm trying to install:

I don't understand what Java 5 is about, do you mean that the OmegaT CAT translation software needs a Java 5?

A "doobee" just means that I'm not sure exactly what it's supposed to be called.

1. Assuming that you are using Ubuntu 6.06, you don't need to manually install Java. It is available in multiverse repositories. Use synaptic package manager to install sun-java5-jre package
2. After installation run commands 'sudo update-alternatives --config java' & 'sudo update-alternatives --config jar' from terminal.
3. After this is done and command 'java -version' shows 1.5 you can try installing your package by double clicking it or using command 'java -jar OmegaT.jar'

Can you help with this problem?
