You can tell ubuntu to install the proprietary drivers. I have an ATI HD 3200 and the proprietary driver (fglrx) works well.

ubuntu 10.04 "hardware drivers" program does not detect the video card. due to this I'm force to use the open source drivers.

The fglrx driver supports ATI cards from 8500 and up, with the exception of the 9100 IGP, the Mobility 9000 (IBM/Lenovo), and possibly a few others (read the release notes on the download page on ATI's website). As of this writing the x800 cards are difficult to get working and the x1600+ cards are not supported, but check the support forum for the latest information.

It doesn't work as ATi are still behind in support (standard). Lucid ships with xorg version 7.5 wheras ATi's driver only supports up to xorg 7.4
source:
http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/linux/Pages/radeon_linux.aspx?type=2.4.1&product=2.4.1.3.5&lang=English

So you can either hang on Karmic which uses 7.4 or find a way to use xorg 7.4 on Lucid (messy).

This situation is entirely the fault of ATI. Nvidia support is great and their drivers run on Lucid without a single issue. Mind you Nvidia have supported Linux as long as I've been using Linux (since 1995) and they re the ONLY video card brand I will buy due to phenomenal support
