Can't login to lucid

Asked by bluestar14

after i install lucid beta one, and i think upgraded to beta 2(there was no way to be sure), i activated the nvidia-96 display driver, which was supposed to be supported in beta 2, i then restart, and everything goes fine until i click my name, then the computer freezes, and the screen goes black and then returns showing the screen before i clicked my name, is this because i was in beta one?(to upgrade to beta 2, i did "sudo apt-get upgrade", and then "sudo apt-get dist-upgrade"..is that the right way?) the bottom line is...I NEED MY LUCID!!!( and my nvidia graphics)

hi :)

During boot-up do you get the grub menu with lots of options for booting into Ubuntu? If so then the 2nd option should have "recovery mode" near the end of it's line. Choosing that should get you to a disturbingly blue screen but with a helpful menu, scroll down to "fix x-server" and try that. Then scroll back to the top of the list and try "Resume normal boot"

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

My comment will not help you now, but for future use:

LUCID IS NOT FOR PRODUCTION USE. PLEASE do not install it unless you know what you are doing!

HI :)

Do you have an Ubuntu Cd? If so then try booting up with it
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/LiveCD

This should give you access to all the data and stuff on your hard-drive. Crucially it gives us an opportunity to help you set things up to be a LOT more robust.

You can easily have both a stable version of Ubuntu and have the latest beta release so that you can enjoy the best of both without taking up much extra drive-space.

So, please let us know if/when you get the LiveCd session working or ask us for help in doing that.

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

Doesn't matter actually if alpha, beta, rc or final, because almost any software incl.
“This program is distributed [..] WITHOUT ANY [...] FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE”

Conclusion: KB + Backup

In case login via CLI or Recovery Mode and switch driver.
https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-devel/2010-March/030380.html

Until the issue is fixed login via CLI and watch what updates actually do.
btw. no need for sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?s=a99e226700655835a9416180457020a8&p=5337212&postcount=5

You already run Lucid in whatever state, just normal update + upgrade like any other release.
Don't configure a lot until you get final, which will roll in automatically.
Or reinstall and create separate root and home partitions, hence on new installation you're able to keep your home and just need to reinstall root fs.

Hi :)

I think you will find the data is still there and accessible through a LiveCd session
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/LiveCD

Using the LiveCd is just to "scout out" your data & let us know you can see it. Until you are more experienced with using a LiveCd please don't try to move it elsewhere just yet and definitely don't install anything onto your hard-drives until we have been able to work out how safe that data is.

Note the Caution notice early in this guide
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/DataRecovery

The LiveCd is great for accessing the internet but it doesn't remember anything saved to it's Desktop or "Documents" folders. You can use it to copy stuff to external hard-drive or to burn data onto a 2nd Cd if you have a 2nd cd/dvd-drive but that usually takes a bit more experience of using the LiveCd sessions.

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

Hi :)

A separate /home partition makes the system much more robust. Then you can reinstall the / without changing the /home.

Noveau is supposed to be good but it probably doesn't cover all cards. That "fix x-server" thing can get things wrong sometimes too.

I definitely think a LiveCd session is a good idea to practice a few things on to avoid hurting your main install.

Then try stuff like that in a sandboxed install, such as a dual/multi-boot with one of those being for testing purposes. The advantage with having an extra partition for testing purposes is that even after testing it's still useful for playing around with other distros for fun

Good luck and regards from

Yep, sorry, sounded a little different ;-)

Try this and you should be fine.
sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg
