Greg,

I assume when you started the update process you got a message about "Partial Upgrade"?

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuDevelopment/UsingDevelopmentReleases#Getting%20Started includes the quote: "Never do a partial upgrade, things are held back for a reason" and "..if the archive is in flux then it will remove things to keep your computer consistent. Usually you do not want this, so don't do it."

I had never run into a Partial Upgrade until using a Development Release, but I have learned that when it says "Partial Upgrade" in Update Manager the ONLY option is to press Cancel!

To update what is possible use the command "sudo aptitude safe-upgrade", which won't remove items that cannot be reinstalled (as the packages are being held back for what-ever reason).

I believe you may have to wait until the packages are fixed in order to reinstall the required packages... I could be wrong.

Best of luck,
George

In the mean time try running "metacity --replace" to see if you get some functionality back!
