install errors, uninstall & reinstall?

Asked by David Wilkinson

After installation-at start up- I get the following error message-"Problem with configuration server (/usr/lib/libconf 2-4-sanity-check-2 exited with status 256" After closing this I get the following "Install problem-Configuration defaults for GNOME power management not installed correctly".
Is there an easy fix for this? If not, I assume I need to uninstall and reinstall but how do I do this? Can I overlay the new installation in the current ukuntu partition? If not, how do I clean it out for the new install?
In addition, the password I set up is not being accepted.
As you can see I need help.
Dave

open synaptic package manager

I can't get to the synaptic package manager. I don't get to an orange screen where I assume I could get access. What happens is this: I get the two error messages I described after which I am asked to log on. When I put in what should be my password I am looped back to the first error message and the process starts over.
Very frustrating. My sense is that I need to start over with a clean slate and the former hard drive partions.

If you do want to reinstall, there's no uninstall procedure you need to go through: Ubuntu will just replace the current setup as it installs. It might be worth verifying the installation disc first to ensure that it was created correctly.

Can you help with this problem?
