pulse audio input settings

Each time I start my computer (w/Ubuntu 9.10) the sound settings for my mic (Preferences/Sound/Input) are set to "Mute" and I have to manually turned it on.
How can this be permanently resolved?

try alsa mixer
sudo apt-get install alsamixergui
this will be available under Applications>sound and video
