Realtek ALC880 Audio Card - How to make front-audio jacks to work?

My PC hosts the sound card mentioned in the summary (it is embedded in the motherboard).

I really cannot make the front audio jacks (one for mike and one for earphones) to work.
I have tried to install many alsa drivers, to try solutions posted in forums and bug trackers, but I have not found any real solution.

If my memory is good, the HW worked properly with the Hardy release (the first I used when I started switching from Windows to Ubuntu), but stopped to work when I upgraded to Intrepid.

Does anyone has suggestions and or solutions?

Please execute step 1, then reboot and send us the full terminal output from step 3 and step 4 from this procedure:

Hello Mark,

I tried to upgrade my alsa driver as described in the provided link (Step 1) in my Lucid beta1 installation, but then I'm not able to login anymore...

See bug https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gdm/+bug/552040
, which I already had during beta1 testing.
First time I had it, I was able to fix it starting in recovery mode and repairing packages. This time, I had no luck...

Hi,

Please try this procedure:

1. copy-paste the following command into the Terminal:

gksudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf

2. and add these lines to the end of the /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf file:

# So you need to go into the alsa-base.conf file and then add the following lines at the end of it.

# Keep snd-pcsp from being loaded as first soundcard

3. reboot and retest sound

4. In gnome-alsamixer , make sure to unmute all channels and increase the volume on all channels

5. If it still does not work, please try one of the following model options instead (REPLACING 6stack as model option, so only use 1 model option at a time):

You will need to reboot and retest sound via front audio jack after every change to the alsa-base.conf file

This solved my problem on my lucid beta1 installation; I just had to find the proper microphone identifier in pavucontrol to make it work (tested with Skype).

I will be patient until end of April before implementing on my main installation (release update from karmic to lucid).
Please give me some additional hints for the release update mentioned above:
  - will alsa-driver version 1.0.22.1 be included by default in lucid, or shall I manually compile and install as described in the troubleshoot Step1?
  - Is it enough jut to update my /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf as you descrived in your previous post, step 2, or shall I redo the complete troubleshoot procedure?

After installing the final version of Ubuntu 10.04, first modify the alsa-base.conf file, then reboot and retest. If it works, then there is no need to manually compile the ALSA drivers.

Please set this thread status to "solved", if this issue is still solved.
