Can't log in after regular update on Lucid

Asked by Juan Rivera

Hi:
I performed regular updates for Lucid on my system, but after rebooting can't log in. The mouse and keyboard freeze and it simply does nothing.

Is there a way to revert any changes and/or boot in "safe mode" in order to correct this problem. I have been unable to access my information stored in that system.

Thanks

Both of these option require you to hold down the SHIFT key as the computer first starts up (before GRUB loads).
This will give you the Grub menu.

I'd first recommend you try selecting an older kernel (if one is available), and see if the mouse/keyboard freeze occurs only after a kernel update.

Second option is selecting the "... (recovery mode)", then you could try netroot or root - to get to a console, if you want to run any commands.

Best of luck,
George

Hi George:

I tried older kernels, but did not solve the problem. I even ran 209Mb worth of updates and eve though kernel .19 has been installed, it did not solve the problem either.

Right after the log in screen comes on, I click on the username, so the password prompt appears, but that is where the keyboard and mouse freeze. any other suggestions as to what may be the culprit?

Thanks!

can you boot into recovery mode and then select repair broken packages....
and do sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop
it will install kubuntu desktop on your pc as and keep it as a permanent alternative for the gnome it will take up about 500 MB space but will give you relief at such times.
