HP Laserjet 6p on ethernet print server connection

Asked by MoriartyNZKiwi

I am using an HP Laserjet 6P printer connected via an ethernet print-server.
I know the print server's address, 192.168.1.3, and I have installed the printer using the following in the appropriate box for such a connection,

correct me if I am wrong.......

ipp://192.168.1.3:631/ipp

just opened the printer/ proerties box and this is displayed,
Paused: /usr/lib/cups/backend/ipp failed

Printer is on and known to work on a Windows box on the netwrok, network works, can see Internet (obviously!!!) and the other puter.

I completely confused now! can't get rid of Windows on the other puter until we can print on the ethernet printer.

Thanks in acvance people. Bob.E (Aka Moriarty)

From Ubuntu System meny select, Administration, Printing
Click on add new printer
Hopefully Ubuntu now automatically detects your network printers.
If this is the case just select and click forward to select the right driver for the current printer.

Thanks for the Answer, Magnus, but didnt help, the printer is NOT a network printer, attached to a computer, it is connected to the LAN via a ethernet/parralell adapter. Address of which is 192.168.1.3

I have tried you advice, removing the existing printer, adding a newone to refresh the drivers, putting the address of the adaptor in the appropriatte dialogue box, but still not printing. this is very very frustrating!! I might cry soon!!! LOL

So is it a parallell printer using a ethernet adapter?
Is the ethernet adapter from HP also or what kind of ethernet adapter are you using?

Madnus:

Parallel printer, using an ethernet adapter.

Adapter is marketed by Dick Smith Electronics, Australai/New Zealand under the part number XH7915
It is an Aftermarket device similar to the BELKIN one.

Ubuntu does not see the printer during an "add new printer" operation.

Sorry for my bad advices.
Have you tried configuring from Administration, Printing, Click on add new printer dialog
by selecting Network printer TCP/IP Socket, HP JetDirect, Raw connection
Host: 192.168.1.3
Port: 9100

This usually works with generic network adapters.
You could also try to copy port settings from your Windows box.

Hope this helps
Magnus

That was the first thing I tried, because when choosing the TCP/IP option, port 9100 is available by default.
also tried tcp/ip with port 613 still no go.

I can "SEE" the setup utility in a web browser by typing in HTTP://192.168.1.3
can I send you screen shots or anything? Provided I can work out how to DO a screenshot LOL.

You have any idea how FRUSTRATED I am getting? next there will be webcam, scanner, tv card questions, so buckle up for a long tutorial session.

Regards...... Bob from New Zealand

If everything else fails read the manual (;
Dick Smith has a support page for DSE Print Server 10/100Mbps EP (XH7915) at http://www.dse.co.nz/cgi-bin/dse.storefront/46b04f5e00e59b442740c0a87f3306c9/Export/catalogs/SUPXH7915
Here you can find the user manual in pdf format. Beginning at page 38 there is instructions on how to install the printer adapter in different distributions of Linux.
In the manual there is no instruction for Ubuntu so you have to try it out. Use the sudo command instead of logging in as root.

tftp is used in the instruction. You can install tftp by entering
sudo apt-get install tftp
at command terminal

Success!!!!

In Ubuntu, there is a provision for installing a new printer as a UNIX printer

select : NETWORK PRINTER
Select: Unix Printer (LPD)

then

HOST: (TCP/IP address, in MY case) 192.168.1.3
Queue : PrenitServer

All is now well!!!

now for the Scanner, Webcam, Bluetooth, surround sound..........
