windows xp fails to open with dual-boot ubuntu 9.10

Asked by chas

Just installed ubuntu 9.10 as a dual - boot with windows xp. So far loving ubuntu. When I rebooted to get xp selecting the boot line " Windows NT/2000/XP (loader) (on /dev/sda1) " the next screen shows " TRAP 00000006 =========EXCEPTION====== ". The command line information from the window boot line is
insmod fat
set root=(hd0,1)
search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set c0ea-f855
drivemap -s (hd0) ${root}
chainloader +1

Any ideas? My daughter is pretty upset with me, and if I try to uninstall ubuntu I may also lose access to xp.
I've spent time on the dual-boot previous questions and they didn't help.
Thanks, chas

seems like u have parted ur Windows partition during installation.
in most case it's not a problem for XP, but ..

u can try boot with WinXP cd and select repair .. in shell go with recovering (maybe this one: http://helpdeskgeek.com/how-to/fix-mbr-xp-vista/)

don't worry about ur love ubuntu ... go with ubuntu live cd and proceed
