Problems with wireless connection
Hello,
I have heard great things about Ubuntu, and have downloaded the latest version. The installation was quick but I have encountered a few problems:
1, I am using a Dell Inspiron laptop with an ibuilt Intel Proset Wireless adapter - Ubuntu does not seem to recognises this are there
any patches available to install this?
2, As I am on a wireless connection I cannot gain access to the internet or my wireless printer which is a Lexmark Z series inkjet.
3, Other problems are: When I try to change the time / display background it does not recognise the changes, and goes back to the default - why is this?
I hope someone will help, as it looks like a good piece of kit, and I would like to trial it for a while. As it is I keep having boot to windows in order to print / access the internet.
Thanks in advance, any help greatly appreciated.

Hi,
Please first connect your network card to the wireless router using an ethernet cable (also known as a LAN cable).
In order to gather essential troubleshooting information about your wireless card, please follow this procedure:
Step 1: Open Terminal from "Applications-
Step 2: Please copy-paste the following command from the https:/
Tip: If you have a wheel mouse or 3 button mouse you do not need to type commands into the Terminal. Highlight the command written on the page. Move your cursor anywhere in the Terminal and press the wheel or middle button. Automatic Copy and paste! No spelling mistakes! No Typos! No other errors!
sudo lshw -C network; sudo iwlist scanning; cat /etc/network/
Step 3: Please post results (copy/paste terminal output) on this thread. The troubleshooters here need to see the full Terminal output from running the above command.
Step 4: Please also specify the exact model and make of your PC (if known) on this thread
Regards,
Mark

Hello Mark,
Thanks for your email. I have made some progress, as the system can now see my wireless router but, will not let me connect when I enter my wpa key.
As requested I ran the script, and here it is:

My laptop is a Dell Inspiron 600M, and my wireless router is a Thomson TG585 V7
I have now managed to sort out the background colours, and the time / date, so no need to worry on those fronts. As soon as I can get my wireless network to work, I think it will be plain sailing.
Thanks again for your assistance, look forward to hearing back.
Regards,
Edward.

That's not the full output. Please rerun the whole command which starts with 'sudo' and ends with 'restart'
This is the whole command:
sudo lshw -C network; sudo iwlist scanning; cat /etc/network/
Send the whole output, please

Hi,
According to the output you sent us, your wireless card seems to be working fine (working out-of-the-box) and has detected 3 different wireless access points
If you are unable to "see" (and connect to) your wireless access point by choosing "edit connections" in the Networkmanager icon in the top right corner of your Ubuntu desktop, then I suggest this alternative:
First connect your network card to the wireless router using a LAN cable.
Then please follow this procedure:
Step 1: Open Terminal from "Applications-
Terminal"
Step 2: Run the following commands (copy-paste each line below to the Terminal then hit <enter> after each line)
sudo aptitude update
sudo aptitude install wicd
Step 3: Please post results (copy/paste terminal output from each command) on this thread
Step 4: Enable SSID broadcasting on the router and temporarily disable all security (deactivate WEP and WPA(2) encryption) on the wireless router
Step 5: Make sure to call the wireless interface
eth1
inside the wicd configuration panel.
You can read more about wicd here: http://
Step 6: Try to connect to your wireless network using wicd.
Regards,
Mark

Hello,
Thanks this worked a treat, first time no problems whatever. It might be nothing but on the first network set up it would not let me type my WPA / WEP letters in capitals. Whereas WICD did so.
It connects much quicker than it ever has in Windows.
Thanks again.
Edward.
