how to back up/restore thunderbird address book after Ubuntu update

Asked by eldergnome on 2010-04-02

Newbie. After I install new Ubuntu later this month I understand Firefox and Thunderbird will have updated versions. How do I backup/restore my Thunderbird address book after the Ubuntu update? My current backup is the entire Home directory to an external hard drive.

Thunderbird profiles are stored inside the .thunderbird (or .mozilla-thunderbird) directory within your home folder. You may need to view hidden files (Ctrl + H) to see it. Copying that folder will back up your address book, accounts, etc.

After upgrading and installing Thunderbird 3, copying the folder back to your home directory should restore your settings.
In the event that it doesn't you'll need to restore using the profile manager:
Open the Run Application dialog (Alt + F2) and type:
thunderbird -ProfileManager
Delete any default profiles present in the list
Click Create Profile and follow through the wizard. When it asks for a new profile name, there should also be an option to choose the folder for the profile. Pick the restored folder (e.g. /home/<USERNAME>/.thunderbird/<abcd1234>.default), then Finish the wizard, and Start Thunderbird.

You can backup and restore Firefox similarly using the .mozilla folder and firefox-ProfileManager
