recent info dual boot ubuntu 9 w/2 hard drives

Asked by JOHN

Can you lead me to recent how-to information for installing WinXP and Ubuntu 9.10 in a dual boot configuration on 2 hard drives?

The latest lead-you-by-the-hand guide I've found appears to be about three years old: http://www.ehomeupgrade.com/2006/06/02/how-to-dual-boot-ubuntu-606-dapper-linux-desktop-along-side-windows-xp/

The procedure for 606 dapper may not work for 9.10 KK.

The master/slave thing applies.

Probably best to set the hardrive with windows to slave and install Ubuntu last on the hardrive set to master.

Ubuntu should pick up windows automatically during install and provide a boot menu at startup to select from.

I searched Ubuntu HELP for info and found plenty on dual boot but nothing about using 2 hard drives.

I have experience with these configurations. I assume your hardrives are IDE and you want to set them up master and slave. What os(s) are installed allready ? Are you going to install both windows and ubuntu from scratch? Whats gotta go where??? If you can provide some detail i can send you instructions.

I am going to build a new computer in a week or so. I'll have 2 SATA hard drives. On one I want Win7 and Ubuntu on the other- new Win7 and Ubuntu. I plan to use Win7 only for those things requiring Windows, including a couple of ancient programs. Ubuntu will be used for web browsing and e-mail. I think Win7 will go on-line only for MS patches and updates.

John with sata just have the drives pluged in, now in linux they will look like sda1 ,sdb1 and so on not hda(x).

The motherboard has labels indicating the sata ports and their numbers which the bios will search for a bootable partition. Starting with the first in line.

The following assumes you have some knowledge of installing operating systems, both Ubuntu and windows.

* Plug-in the drives if not allready
- identify which sata drive(s) is at which sata port(s) (if new and identical i quess it doesnt matter)

* Install win7
- during the install process identify/select the second hardrive in order
- format and install

* Install Ubuntu
- during install, at the partitioning step, select custom partitioning and select/install the Ubuntu file system (/) and swap partition on the first hardrive
- the grub2 boot loader, installed with Ubuntu, will detect, list and present a boot menu with Ubuntu and Win7

* Grub2
- The order of boot can be changed by editing /etc/default/grub and changing the line at the top GRUB_DEFAULT=0 to read, for example GRUB_DEFAULT=4.

example grub2 boot menu
ubuntu = 0
ubuntu recover = 1
memtest = 2
another memtest = 3
Vista = 4
