9.10 "display server is broken" How to install patches?

Asked by jesseay

I've found talk about the bug, and found the patches, but I don't know what to do with them. Looking for advice on how to download patches and what to do with them. Thanks

Hi Jessie,

In my experience it's best to find the maintainer of the package and work with him/her to get the patch applied at the source, and then made available in a PPA, and eventually in the main Ubuntu repository. In cases where it's software that comes from upstream (non-Ubuntu) sources, it's a longer process but one worth doing. Bryce Harrington has a PPA as do the xorg-egders that might be logical places for this type of patch.

I know that's not an answer to the specific instance of your question, but hopefully it helps in some way.

Cheers,
Randall

So I have read the link to PatchSystems, but it seems to me more about systems for patching, for package maintainers. Not really a how to apply a patch.
What I have gathered, I think:

is that I need the source code for the package in question,
and then apply a patch to the source code,
and then replace the package with the patched code...

If someone can confirm my logic, and add anything I've misunderstood I would be exctatic.

Also, the package in question is the Gnome-power-manager, and i think xorg-server

The patch is here
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/attachment.cgi?id=153600
apparently...

and I have this from the bug report:

This is now fixed upstream
Changed in gnome-power-manager (Ubuntu):
status: Triaged → Fix Committed

Does that mean there is an easier way to fix my problem (intermittent 'display server broken' msg and screen brightness flickering)

Thanks for the help!
J
