gddrescue

Asked by oddvar

I wonder if there is an Ubuntu program with a nice GUI interface to gddrescue? I accidentaly blanked my external HD 20GB and now I try to recover my lost disk with ddrescue. (First time I tried I destroyed my HD.) To avoid this I simply put the output from ddrescue to my own home dir.

sudo ddrescue /dev/sdb1 Toshiba rescue.log

Now I have a 20G Toshiba in my home dir, but how can I mount and access it?

why not just use dd_rescue in terminal in a liveCD session.

It sounds like you actually need to use foremost, this can extract files from borked partitions (if possible) and spit the files to a mounted partition / samba share / ftp server.

Much easier still is to restore from your backups. You will have backups if the data is important to you.

Get a backup schedule sorted and you won't have to bother next time, simply restore the 100% consistent data from the latest backup. What would you have done if the data was irretrievable....
