Neither Totem or Soundjuicer plays audio, but Amarok works fine, and I use a SoundBlaster AUDIGY card.

Asked by RedWar

Hi, I am currently still dual booting with Windows and migrated myself from Fedora Core 6 into Ubuntu, seeking an easier walkin into the alternative OS universe. I am so far extremely satisfied with Ubuntu 7.04. However, I am running into a very odd problem, that I cannot figure out. What it comes down to is this: I cannot play audio CD's on Sound Juicer, although, Amarok runs fine, and I can hear the audio cd loud and clear. Totem plays the Video, but the audio cannot be heard. I have checked the channels using Alsa, and found that all are running, but I cannot see how, if its a channel issue, that Amarok can play the CD's fine and the streams. Can someone perhaps guide me on this?
Thank you.

Thanks Michal. One of the problems is that Sound Blaster is not showing up anywhere on my devices available, but instead whats happening is that I get one of three devices [the following is when you go to the speaker icon over at the upper right hand corner, and you click on it]:
1. CA0106- Which is what I am on now, and from an IRC chat in one of the forums I was told should be my card, but I don't know... (ALSA MIXER)
2. SiS SI7012 (Alsa Mixer)
3. Mixer00 (OSS MIxer)

I have messed around a bit using that speaker icon, but I have not really had any luck. I am using Amarok, and everything is running great, I just wish I could find out what exactly Amarok is doing to put out sound, then I might be able to find out what I can do to have Totem and Soundjuicer do the same.

I don't know if anyone can walk me through this one, but I would surely appreciate if someone could guide me on this. Amarok works for audio, and Gnome Desktop sounds are working fine. I am able to get You Tube audio fine. My problem is with getting sound to come through Totem and Sound Juicer. I read the recommended bug suggested, but since I am everything but less than a novice, I can't figure much out here. I dont know how to switch control off or on, and I dont know anything about INITSRIPT, or any shell commands. I want to learn though, so, I'd appreciate any guidance. Here is some Output Below:

PS--> I don't have KMIX, I checked. Just in case that comes up, since there was something in the bug report of 106380 that mentioned this.

Another update....
I started to mess around in FluxBox Desktop, and it did something, because for a while, I lost all sound, even after reboot. I was about to howl at the moon, when on a hunch, I used Grub, and booted up a recovery. It started the process of unmounting pipelines, etc. It then took me to a BASH and had me as ROOT. (I did not think UBUNTU ran off root...) So I decided to simply go ahead and typed Exit. It then booted UBUNTU up, and I had my sound back, but it did not help TOTEM.

Further research, I am finding more and more posts about this subject, and with no resolution. I am not sure why my set up does not work, but I have made a couple of observations, and if anyone can tell me what they think of them, I would greatly appreciate it.
1. I have Amarok, and Flashplayer items that play.
2. Those items that do play audio, I cannot adjust using the speaker volume in Gnome, but I have to go to panel of the respective players above, to adjust.
3. UBUNTU sound effects, you would think that on my system I should adjust using the GNOME volume control (pressing the keyboard buttons for volume brings up the speaker in the middle of the screen, and it seems to adjust the bar) but the adjustments using these controls, even when you head to the speaker Icon on the upper right hand corner, does nothing to change the volume of the GNOME sound effects. Only by entering ALSAMIXER in terminal and adjusting the values of ANALOG F, am I able to control the volume of sound effects, which are all linked to Amarok or Flashplayer audio.

It was the codecs. Totem was missing some final codecs for download.
