Screen resolution in Ubuntu 9 >

Asked by Lionel Pringle

I find that in all versions of Ubuntu from 9.04 onwards (including the beta version of 10.04) the highest screen resolution I can get is 800x600.
This was never the case in previous versions where there was a much wider range of choice including a usable 1024x768. I have used three different monitors, none of them more than three years old and one is new, and the result is identical.
Can anybody explain why this is the case and is there is SIMPLE way of overcoming the problem as having to work at 800x600 really spoils the Ubuntu experience. Windows gives me a choice of seven settings

Can you type xrandr in a terminal and post the output here, this tells what resolutions are recognize by your pc. Also type lspci -nn | grep VGA in a terminal and post the output here, this tell what type video card is installed in your pc. This page https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Config/Resolution provides instructions on how to add undetected resolutions using xrandr and cvt commands.

Can you help with this problem?
