AMD 64 Installation

Asked by nluna

I am trying to install Ubuntu 9.10 on my AMD 64 system. I am using a cd install disk with the AMD 64 iso version. After choosing the language, some text will load up and after that the installation will stall in a dark screen. I try installing it using the safe graphic option on F4 but that didn't work either. Please help.

Did you verify the ISO using MD5 test?
DId you verify the CD once booted to?

No, I didn't check the iso using MD5 test. I did downloded the iso twice and made two different installation disks. Both gave me the same problem. I am going to download the iso ome more time and gave it a try. I will also try verifying both the iso and the disks. Thank you.

that has happened to me both ways, well I tried ubuntu the 32-bit version and that one worked fined, but when I tried mint the 32-bit version it did not work and by the way mint is basically same as ubuntu but a little different.

So if you can't install the 64bit version then install the 32-bit version and am sure it will work, if you computer is somewhat like 2006 the device driver for your video card is best with the one with the lowest number don't get the recommended. My computer couldn't handle the recommend.

You still need to MD5 test the ISO. You could statistically download the ISO and infinite number of times and never get a good image. Torrents add extra checking to the data but you should still verify the ISO. You should also burn as slowly as you can to make the image as dark as you can on the disk as well as run the CD verifier to make sure the data on the disk is perfect

Mint is not supported on this forum, it has its own forum.

You could also try adding boot options as well as disabling unnecessary hardware for the duration of the install (sound, lan, bluetooth, whatever) so the system is as basic as possible.

First of, thank you for taking your time to answer my question. I try installing it with the 32 bit version and I can't get pass the Prepare Partition screen. At this screen I can't create the partitions. Pardon my ignorance but how do I check the iso with the MD5 test. On my windows xp device manager I am also missing the SM Bus Controller drive...again pardon my lack of computer knowledge. Thank you so much for helping me out.

MS XP Sm Bus Controller installed and no drivers missing this time. I still can't get passed the Prepare Partition screen and the mouse is not working during installation. I will give it a try tomorrow. Thank you.

Yeah my system was missing that driver too for a while but its some power management thing. It will be installed by default in Linux as what windows does or doesn't do is moot.

Please use zvacet's link to test the files you downloaded. It's important to be sure that the data you are using is error free as any bit errors can and will cause issues.

Once the ISO is known to be good then burn the CD as slowly as your software will allow, this can help greatly too. Then once booted to the CD run the verifier on the first boot screen after you select your language.

All of the above steps will ensure that the CD is 100% perfect and not the cause of any issues.

Problem Solved! I simply updated the BIOS. I tried all that was suggested...checking the iso with MD5 and checking the disk for errors. Both the iso and the installation cd were in good shape. During the installation using the 32 bit version, the mouse and keyboard were not functioning and I could not get pass the partition manager setup screen. I was ready to give up. So I decided to update the BIOS and voila! After the update everything was a piece of cake. Thank you all for your assistance.
