can not install lucid due to live cd mounted to root partition

Asked by steros

Hi,

i try to install via live cd on an already partitioned harddisk. I can not change the partitions.
I get this error:

Your installation medium is on /dev/sda5. You will not be able to create, delete, or resize partitions on this disk, but you may be able to install to existing partitions there.

I found a way to umount it (sudo umount -l -r -f /dev/sda5) so it is accessible to the installer but then it closes with this error:

The ext4 file system creation in partition #5 of /dev/sda failed.

How do i install ubuntu using that partition?
Can i tell the live-cd which partition it can use?

Open a terminal and input the command sudo fdisk -l, and place the output here.

Through the installation wizard on the LiveCD, you can specifically tell the installer which partition you want to install Ubuntu. I do not recall the exact verbiage, but when you get to partitioning stage of the installation, there is an option to specify the partitions manually.

Hi,

that's not the problem ;)
I can select the partitions but i can not select the one i want cause its "locked" bye the live-cd mounted on it.

I got around with using the alternate installation cd.
But that does not help anybody :/

Best
