Kernel Installation Failure

Asked by cavendish61

ubuntu 7.04 desktop i386.iso alternate. Attempting to install on a 9 gig empty drive. Approx half way through I have "Kernel Installation Failure". This would seem to be quite critical.
Also (these screens were ignored) I had "debootstrap failure" during the installation.
Thanks.

There were similar problems with beta versions of Ubuntu 7.04, I am sure you're using the final, release version.

Try to install from the Ubuntu installation DVD - it offers more kernels during installation. Try to select a kernel that better matches your hardware, for example an SMP kernel for AMD processors if your computer contains an Athon processor with two cores

Thanks for that. The reason for the use of the "alternate" version was that the "basic" version failed - it would not move to the second installation screen.
The PC has an Intel Pentium 3 450 CPU.

The DVD can start in the alternate installation mode as well, but I am wondering how much memory is installed in this PC?

Thanks. 256MByte. The Hard Drive has 9 Gig. Free.

That should be enough. Try to select another kernel during installation in alternate mode from the DVD

Thanks. From memory (mine) that would be at the start of the installation - from the opening screen. Would you care to suggest an appropriate kernel?

Can't recall all kernels that are offered, but probably a kernel with "586" or "686" in its name
