xubuntu: no panels after install

just installed xubuntu and have no top or bottom panels. i have installed 3 times already and get the same each time. i checked the download and the burned disc and its all correct. im new to this OS so any help would be grateful. my machine is a ibm laptop 600e\288 ram\20gb hd\300 mhz processor.thanks

Can you try with a cold reboot (no CD in driver too)?
