Update Manager Problem

Asked by chundocho

Hello:

This is my first time using Ubuntu 7.04, it came installed on my dell PC. Recently (Before I knew the existence of this page) I was looking a way to play mp3 files so I follow the instructions of this web page

http://www.harecoded.com/2006/02/17/how-to-play-mp3-with-ubuntu/

It’s usual to find many distributions without MP3 support due to licensing issues. If you have MP3 files and don’t know how to play them do the following:

   1. Open the terminal
   2. Type sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list
   3. Remove comments to packages (This is erasing the # characters in lines starting with ##deb)
   4. Save changes and close gedit
   5. Update the packages sudo apt-get update
   6. Install the mulitmedia codecs:
      sudo apt-get install gstreamer0.8-plugins
      sudo apt-get install gstreamer0.8-lame
      sudo apt-get install gstreamer0.8-ffmpeg
      sudo apt-get install w32codecs
      sudo apt-get install libdivx4linux
      sudo apt-get install lame
      sudo apt-get install sox
      sudo apt-get install ffmpeg
      sudo apt-get install mjpegtools
      sudo apt-get install vorbis-tools
      gst-register-0.8

Now you can open a player like Rythmbox or Kaffeine and start listening songs. Totem won’t play mp3 with this. To associate mp3 files with a player, right-click on a mp3 file and go to “Open with” tab.

After doing this I receive this message:

A error occurred, please run Package Manager from the right-click menu or apt-get on a terminal to see what is wrong. The error message was: `Error: Opening the cache (E:Type "tity" is not known on line 50 in source list /etc/apt/sources.list, E: The list of sources could not be read.)

"Tity" is my login password

After I click on the error message I receive another error Related to the Update Manager

Could not initialize the package information
A unresolvable problem occurred while initializing the package information.
Please Report this bug againts the `update-manager` package and include the following error message:
`E:Malformed line 51 in source list /etc/apt/sources.list (type),
E: The list of sources could not be read.`

I hope someone could help me fixing this problem so I can continue enjoying of Ubuntu.
Thanks.

When you edited the sources.list file you have inserted extra characters into it which are confusing the package manager.
Open again the /etc/apt/sources.list file and check it.
If you are unsure on what to do, paste it here or in a pastebin site.
If you are not familiar with the process you should not edit system files manually, but use the gui; for instance in this case you could have used System->Administration->Software Sources.

As you can see at the end there is some gabage; this should be deleted:

asdfasdf}}}
}

Check before if there is a file called:

/etc/apt/sources.list~

If this file is not corrupted you can rename it to /etc/apt/sources.list to restore it.
For instance you can do this by deleting the corrupted file and using this command in a terminal:

sudo mv /etc/apt/sources.list~ /etc/apt/sources.list
