Using ubuntu 8.10 I find avi & dat files unplayable. is there any solution?

I am a new user of ubuntu 8.10. I can't play avi and dat files. how to solve this problem ?

For 8.10 you'll need to add the Medibuntu repository info https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Medibuntu

Then (assuming you're using a 32bit version of Ubuntu) install w32codecs (from terminal "sudo apt-get install w32codecs"), if you're using 64bit Ubuntu install w64codecs instead.

install ubuntu 9.10 that is the latest OS available. go to ubuntu.com download and install the OS.
