Unable to install/remove flash player

Asked by Leroy Middlebrooks

Hello everyone, I hope you can help me with this one. I'm a new to Ubuntu 9.10. I allowed some updates to run and now I cannot play Utube videos because the site is asking me to turn on Java or load Adobe Flash Player. When trying to update I get error code 1. Also I cannot remove or install any software.

do it with synaptic package manager... type adobe flash in search box tick the check box and install it.
Install downloadhelper add on in firefox to download flash videos by default firefox should prompt you for downloading flash player and it will give you options to download which one you like ie adobe, shockwave etc select adobe
that should solve your problem.

Okay, here are some more commands that you can try:

sudo dpkg --force all --remove
sudo apt-get clean

Then try again.
If that still does not fix your error, try these steps:

run this commands:
sudo cp /var/lib/dpkg/status /var/lib/dpkg/status.bak

That will back up the file you will be editing.

Now we will edit the file you backed up:

gksu gedit /var/lib/dpkg/status

Search for flashplugin-installer

When you find it, selected and delete the entire entry of that package. So you will select and delete the entry starting from:

"Package: flashplugin-installer"

and ending with the description area. Make sure that you leave a space for the next package. Here's a picture of how you should delete it:

http://www.khattam.info/img/selection.png

After this, run:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get install flashplugin-installer

That should work. Let me know if it does or does not.

This seems like it's actually getting better. Try doing:

sudo apt-get -f install
sudo apt-get upgrade

over and over again until the problematic package is resolved. That should work (hopefully this time :P ).

I found a bug report that looks like your issue:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/samba/+bug/514963

The last post has some info that might be useful:

"Looks like your nmblookup alternatives definition file got corrupted (?)

You could try force-installing it again:
sudo update-alternatives --force --install /usr/bin/nmblookup nmblookup /usr/bin/nmblookup.samba3 0 --slave /usr/share/man/man1/nmblookup.1.gz nmblookup.1.gz /usr/share/man/man1/nmblookup.samba3.1.gz

Also update-alternatives has been revamped in lucid, so this might be already fixed."

Okay, I have something for you. :)

Try running these commands. These will delete important things pertaining to installing samba to your computer, but you have little choice right now. If this works, we'll just clean up after it. Run these lines in order:

cd /var/lib/dpkg/info
sudo rm samba-common-bin*
sudo apt-get purge samba-common-bin

It this works, you SHOULD be good! Then run these:

sudo apt-get autoremove
sudo apt-get clean

Please let me know if it works!

Can you help with this problem?
