Updating to a new Ubuntu release

Asked by LaserLinux

I recently found out that a new Ubuntu release comes out every six months. I am currently running the latest version of Ubuntu. So in about six months time, a new Ubuntu release will come out. How will I update to this version of Ubuntu? Will there be a 'update to newest version' download that will update my current Ubuntu to the new release or will I have to download the whole .iso and re-install Ubuntu, losing all my current settings, software and documents. Also will the update be downloadable through Update Manager or will I have to download it through the web?

I know it's a lot of questions, but I appreciate if you are able to answer all of my questions.

Hello,

here is an example about an network update, in this case to feisty. I am sure that you will be able to update to gutsy in the same way. And here you see the update is downloadable via update manager. You software and documents will not lost (in space).
