Ubuntu ASUS A7V8X = NO SOUND

Asked by AdamWarlock

Anyone care to help me with my NO SOUND issue using Ubuntu 6.06? I have a ASUS A7V8X Motherboard with onboard AC'97 sound chip. Worked perfectly in Windows XP. When I formatted my drive and installed Ubuntu clean, I cannot get it to work. No sound at all. Any ideas?

When I open the alsamixer, it recognizes my onboard AC97 sound card. I have unmuted all the channels and pumped up the volume. Still no sound.

Just let me know what other info I can supply to help this matter! Any help is greatly appreciated!

Please let me know what file sare you trying to play?

Your sound card is well supported. It might be the problem with file you are trying to play being restricted format.

IT looks like we are in the same boat. Maybe there is not a fix to this.

One of the things I have found with the Ubuntu sound issues is that even though the sound card is supported, your audio configuration or preferences are not set properly.

This is what I did to get my audio working on a Gigabyte MB.

First off, make sure that your on board audio is enabled in the BIOS.

Right click on your sound icon in the panel.

Select preferences

Select HDA ATI SB (Alsa Mixer) as your device.

Select PCM as the audio track to control.

Close the window.

Go to System --> Preferences --> Sound

I left all of my settings for Auto-Detect.

To the right of each of your detected sound options, there is a button called "Test". Click on that. If you hear an audio tone, then you have the right sound card configuration.

If still no sound, go to your panel, right click on your speaker, and select "Open Volume Control"

Go to Edit, then select Preferences.

Make sure that the correct speaker channels are enabled, ie, Left, Right, Center, Rear etc. I have front and rear ports on my motherboard that correspond to Side and Left in the audio setup. Try enabling all outputs in your audio preferences. You're bound to get sound out of one of them!

Cheers!

Bob

Bob thanks for the answer. I forgot to get back in here and let everyone know I found the answer to my problem. I just pulled an old sound card from an old computer and put it in there and went to BIOS and disabled onboard sound and enabled that card. Once I did this it was WALLLLAAA sound. So as I sit now I have sound for the time being.

Can you help with this problem?
