Backup ISO too big for CD

Asked by Randymanme

My custom backup iso (remastersys 2.0.15) is 2.1 Gib. I've been trying for over 12 hours to figure out how to compress it fit on a CD. I've gotten it tar.gz but can't get K3B or Brasero to copy it. What to do? May I put on 3 CDs, and do it what I assume is meant by multisession? Any help is appreciated.

Use a DVD. You can use tar to chop the image up to 3 files which you can then burn to the CD as data.

Thanks. I suppose that can be considered <solved>. But, then, again I recall a couple of months ago using backup tool to copy /home and some other stuff. I even put it on a cd. But after I broke that system, I never did figure out how to restore that to a new install. And I still don't know how.

So me using tar to chop the image up into three files, sort of takes me back a couple of months. Oh, I googled and searched and all that and even found some tutorials, but they were all over my head. The CD-RW I put that /home on, I used it to burn an alternative install CD of Lucid Beta 1. I've still got the same computer that won't install anything debian or debian based, et al, so I only get alternative CDs. And don't get to at least enjoy live CDs. Oh, well.

I guess I can use MintUpload to store the 2.1 Gig iso somewhere safe. No, wait. What about Ubuntu One? Will you (or whomever) take me by the hand and explain real simple how I can, say, install a backup of my /home to a Lucid base system and grub? I'll see if I can find usable (at my level) directions for Ubuntu One

you can cut up the file into 3 and burn them as data, if you need a restore, simply copy the 3 chunks back to the system and put it back together.

Linux Mint is not supported here. I suggest you post on the mint forums.

Can you help with this problem?
