Disable GOsa2

Asked by Randymanme

I was browsing through the Ubuntu Software Center when I came upon Gosa2 2.5.19.1 and thought it might be something to try out. After installation, Firefox seems to have a clean profile. Well I don't want Firefox to have a clean profile; I want to be able to view history from weeks ago.

When I go to Applications>system tools>Gosa, I'm directed to a page that says: "Error 404 Sorry, the requested document could not be found on this server." I've tried uninstalling GOsa, but that doesn't help. What to do? Any help would be much appreciated.

To tell you the truth, I'd be cool to disable GOsa and then get rid of it.

Can you expand on "Ubuntu 9.10 to Linux Mint 8" it is confusing.

I recommend you just uninstall it and see what happens:

sudo apt-get --purge remove gosa; sudo apt-get --purge autoremove; sudo apt-get clean

If you also run:

cd; ls -a

You can see if there are any hiden folders containing the config for gosa and delete them to completely remove the app from your system.

Thanks for your quick response. Ubuntu 9.10 to Linux Mint 8? This kind of goes back to question # Question #84591, “May I install an Ubuntu desktop on OpenSuse 11.1?” that I posted on 2009-10-02; Part of which was “But everytime I try to reinstall K/Ubuntu, I get an error message saying
   Installation Failed
The installer encountered an error copying files to the hard disk:
   [errno 5] Input/output error
   . . .
That happens with two Ubuntu installation Cds, three live Ubuntu Cds, one Kubuntu live CD, and one Fedora 11 live CD. However, I was successful on the second try with OpenSuse 11.1 live DVD.”

I still have that problem. No Ubuntu or Ubuntu derivative will install from live CD or DVD. But I found a way around the problem. I use a Jaunty alternative installation CD to install the base system and grub. [The live media automatically abort when they get to the input/output error leaving a broken system written to disk. The alternative CD, however, allows me to skip software installation which is where the error occurs.] It boots to a command line.
From there, I manually install xorg, firefox, and the Ubuntu-desktop, which then enable me to connect with a mirror for update and upgrade. I've done this a lot of times. Linux Mint and Ubuntu packages and repositories are interchangeable, even though Linux Mint is Linux Mint and Ubuntu is Ubuntu (for example, bug reports don't go through because “ . . . this application is not a genuine Linux Mint package.”

I had a nicely tweaked Karmic but broke it upgrading to Lucid alpha 2 after reading in a forum where some folks were hypothesizing that because Lucid alpha 2 was so stable that Karmic was really Lucid alpha. After that, I had a real nice Linux Mint Gloria. I broke that trying to upgrade to Helena after reading that the LM devs only put out new releases several months after Ubuntu so that they have time to work out the bugs and work around known issues. Turns out that lacking a genuine LM distro, one can't upgrade from Jaunty to Gloria to Helena, you have to upgrade Jaunty to Karmic first, then upgrade Karmic to Helena. And you can't downgrade Gloria to Jaunty for the same reasons you can't downgrade, say, Jaunty to Intripid.

Anyway, back to the instant topic:
randall@ubuntu:~$ sudo apt-get --purge remove gosa; sudo apt-get --purge autoremove; sudo

So far, I haven't answered Y or n, nor closed the terminal either. What do you recommend?
At www.linuxquestions.org/questions/linux-newbie-8/firefox-i-changed-my-default-profile-for-login-how-do-i-change-it-back-232613/, some one told someone else (in a different, but similar situation) to “ . . . in a terminal, firefox -P will bring up the Profile Manager so you can select the profile to run.” I've tried that, but to no avail – but, then, I haven't restarted anything yet, either. Well, no, wait, I did restart firefox, but there's no change. Perhaps I should turn firefox off and try it.

Sounds like you are messing with mint which is not supported in any way shape or form here. I suggest you post on a mint forum.

I closed firefox, and in a terminal entered sudo firefox -P, which evoked Profile Manager. There, I selected my original default profile. When I restarted firefox, all was back to normal.

Of course I'll post appropriate thanks at www.linuxquestions.org/questions/linux-newbie-8/firefox-i-changed-my-default-profile-for-login-how-do-i-change-it-back-232613/. But I do thank Launchpad Ubuntu, too.

I also want to include a couple of references showing that it's not atypical to put LM apps on Ubuntu; or in other words, Ubuntu with some LM apps is still Ubuntu.
