Are you actually visiting Ubuntu sites on the web or is it the default page that opens which is actually located on your computer? Check the address bar. Does it something about file or www? If file then you are not actually visiting Ubuntu sites either and need to configure your network. Easiest way is to open the network tool under system - admin and activate your connection (wired, wireless). If you are wireless there could be more issues to address. Can you provide a bit more info about your setup and what happens when you try to visit sites?

My wife is already ticked that I spend so much time doing this. If I start taking support calls she'll probably flip. However, if we can't solve this the "normal" route, we can do it though skype or IRC. That way at least no one has to pay long distance charges.

See if you can answer some or all of the questions I posted earlier. Also, you might try opening a terminal and typing

ping 192.168.1.1

I'm assuming that is your gateway IP as it's a common one. 192.168.0.1 is also common. However, if yours is different please use that instead. If you are not sure, your router/modem documentation should say. Just tying to see if Ubuntu is seeing your router or not. I'm guessing that your network just isn't set up right but it's a guess and before we go much further it would be good to confirm one way or the other.
