9.10 Black screen after kernel update

Asked by Jez

Hi,
I have just installed the latest system updates including linux-kernel 2.6.31-20. I rebooted on prompt but now I am getting a black screen after selecting the kernel from grub 2. The same happens with 2.6.31-19. I cannot get to the login screen. Any ideas?

yes I got a perfect idea reinstall ubuntu and never ever get updates, to do that go to updates manager and click revert and where its it says release longer term or recommened just buy never.

second step, go to systems/application/startup application and find update manager and make sure that update manager doesn't have a check mark it will have it so take it off.

what that will do is that when you turn on the computer updatemanager will not automatically be in memory waiting to come out and tell you to update.

I can't wait till ubuntu 9.10 LT comes because am hoping its more stable. I love ubuntu buts has its issues. I would download ubuntu 8.04 LT but i can't support my netgear usb adapter.

you need to take this opportunity in solving the problem yourself.... it is gdm which is not working....merely by typing gdm restart should bring back the screen or in recovery mode select the third option repair broken dependencies let it update and upgrade itself then after login type startx
that should resolve the issue

Hi Rajinder

Thanks for your answer, I have tried your solution but after logging into tty1 and typing "gdm restart" I get the following:

**(gdm-binary:2599): WARNING **: Failed to acquire org.gnome.DisplayManager: Connection ":1.19" is not allowed to own the service "org.gnome.DisplayManager" due to security policies in the configuration file

**(gdm-binary:2599): WARNING **: Could not acquire name; bailing out

When I try "startx" I just get a black screen again.

Thanks for your answer but it does not really solve my problem as I still
have an unusable PC. I cannot even get to GDM login screen.
