Black screen when installing

I have a 500mhz laptop running xp I put the ubuntu disk in and get to the main boot prompt screen I select either option (normal or safe GFX mode) and I get the ubuntu logo with orange loading bar. Then the screen goes black with a little white underscore in the top left that flashes. This happens indefinetely!

My specs

500mhz PIII
128mb RAM
8mb GFX adaptor S3 Savage IX
Xp is installed...
I have loads of HDD space...

try the alternate version (includes text installer)

also it works better for systems with less ram as you have stated :)

hey as an alternative,try out xubuntu and then after installing xubuntu you can install ubuntu updates perfect for low end systems... xubuntu system requirements are:
To run the Desktop CD (LiveCD + Install CD), you need 128 MB RAM to run or 192 MB RAM to install. The Alternate Install CD only required you to have 64 MB RAM.

To install Xubuntu, you need 1.5 GB of free space on your hard disk.

Once installed, Xubuntu can run with 64 MB RAM, but it is strongly recommended to use at least 128 MB RAM
