Codec + Mixer: Realtek ALC260 - ALC260 Analog (DUPLEX) Audio device [0403]: Intel Corporation 82801G (ICH7 Family) High Definition Audio Controller [8086:27d8] (rev 01) - sound not working on headphones and speakers on HP Compaq dc7600 Ultra-slim Desktop in Ubuntu 9.10 - using ALSA Driver version: 1.0.22.1
I cannot hear sound through the speakers or the headphones. I followed the troubleshooting steps found here:

I ran through them twice to be sure that I did not overlook anything the first time. This is a brand new install and not an upgrade of a previous Ubuntu release. I am an Ubuntu newbie. its great but I really want to get the sounds working. If there is any additional information you need please let me know.
