trying to use a new computer with a netgear wireless router

Asked by amandatate

I am a virgin broadband customer. I can get on line when I connect my computer directly to the modem but I want to use a wireless router - how do I do this? The wireless router I have is a white netgear wireless router WGR614.

You need to make sure the router has wireless enabled, which it may have out of the box. This connection can either be un-secured or secured. An unsecured connection is one that anyone (your neighbors) can connect to and use your connection, which you probably don't want. A secured connection will require a password or "key" for anyone to connect to. Ubuntu (and your Netgear) support WPA, which is good for a home use.

You should have a networking icon (usually in the top right of your screen) that will show your Ethernet (when you're directly connected) and available wireless networks if you have a wireless card. Select the network from that list and give it the password or "key" you've told the router to use. If you haven't told the router to use a key, connect directly to the router and follow these instructions: http://kb.netgear.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/112/c/3/p/15,21,164,215,242,/r_id/100109

Let me know if you need any help!
