"BitDefender-Antivirus-Scanner-7.6-4.linux-gcc4x.i586.deb.run" is an executable text file.

Barry,

First I'd like to mention that typically anti-virus software is not required under linux. See http://librenix.com/?inode=21 for some details.

Now back to your issue: BitDefender-Antivirus-Scanner-7.6-4.linux-gcc4x.i586.deb.run doesn't make any sense. The fact that the file ends in .DEB.RUN is very strange, is this file a DEB or is it an executable? We need to find out: open a terminal and cd to where the download is located (perhaps "cd ~/Downloads"). Now run the command: "file BitDefender-Antivirus-Scanner-7.6-4.linux-gcc4x.i586.deb.run" - if this returns "Debian binary package" then it is a DEB, I don't have a .run file to test with so don't know what it would report back.

If it's a DEB you could install using "sudo dpkg -i BitDefender-Antivirus-Scanner-7.6-4.linux-gcc4x.i586.deb.run". If on the other hand it's not a deb, then you could try running "chmod +x BitDefender-Antivirus-Scanner-7.6-4.linux-gcc4x.i586.deb.run" then "gksu ./BitDefender-Antivirus-Scanner-7.6-4.linux-gcc4x.i586.deb.run" < i'm using gksu assuming it's a graphical install, if it's a text only install then using "sudo ./BitDefender-Antivirus-Scanner-7.6-4.linux-gcc4x.i586.deb.run" would be correct.

Hope this helps,
George

To be able to install Bitdefender using that file, you need to run this command in the Terminal. Considering that you are in the correct directory where that file is located. Type:

sudo sh BitDefender-Antivirus-Scanner-7.6-4.linux-gcc4x.i586.deb.run

then enter your password. You will have to scroll down a bit until you reach the end of the License Agreement and type "accept". When asked "Do you want to install BitDefender Antivirus Scanner GUI package? (Y/N)", just type "y".

After the installalation, you will see BitDefender Scanner in System Tools < Applications. Download the latest update, set a new key and you're good to go.

This is the same instruction I posted in http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=8888554&postcount=12

Hope that answers your question and solves your issue.

By the way, I only use antivirus in Linux for the sake of other people's security.

Can you help with this problem?
