Error using live disk installation

Asked by slash

I am very excited to get started with Ubuntu on my new machine but cannot get it to install.
Here are the circumstances.

I am running a Dell T1500 core i7 (64 bit) @ 2.8 Ghz 3Gb of memory and a SATA 250 GB hard drive and a nVidia Quadro FX580,2DVI,video card. It originally came with windows 7.

I bought a new WD 320 GB drive and Sata cable to do a completely independent install of ubunto on the new drive.

I installed the new drive using the sata cable I bought as a second hard drive on my system. (this consisted of seating the HD, plugging in the SATA cable I bought and also the cable that was already inside the computer to the hard drive)

I turned on the computer and went into BIOS and saw that the second drive had been properly recognized as my second drive, my original hard drive also showed as being the primary one.
(I also ensured that the Boot from CD/DVD was the first boot option), I inserted the Live CD (I obtained from the Ubuntu website)

I re-started my computer and it properly booted from my optical drive, it displayed the first and second screen sown here:

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/GraphicalInstall

I checked the CD for Defects...this yielded no problems

went back to the second screen and selected install

But after I selected install, It started to read the CD then it quickly displayed some data (too fast to read or write down, although it seemed ok) and then screen went black and it just hung there for 20 min...

I assume I do not have to format the Hard drive or do anything fancy..But maybe I am missing a step....

I started the computer back up in windows 7 and I did notice that windows does not recognize the new drive. When I started windows the notification area in the lower right corner said that new devices were ready to be used but when I went to my computer nothing was there???
So I am very confused......BIos says the drive is there but it does not show up in my computer??

Help....this is really annoying, it seems as though I am missing some basic fundamental step or something..
thanks in advance.

What version of Ubuntu are you trying?

I am using Ubuntu 9.10 (32 bit) found here:

http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download

I was told in another thread that installing the 32 bit version should work on a 64 bit machine, but now I am beginning to doubt this.

Also, do I need to format the hard drive some how in order for the install to work? I would have guessed that graphical installer would handle that during the install...

Just as a check, I went ahead and tried the CD I burned on another machine I have (its 32 bit though). I selected the "try Ubuntu without any change to your computer" option and this worked beautifully. So this is an indicator that the CD burned properly.

Any help is greatly appreciated.
thanks in advance.

try to see how long the blank [or black ] screen last you may just need to wait for the install to find the drivers you need . the first install normally takes a bit of time.

Is there any way you can get some more information as to what's happening? I understand that a lot of text is being thrown, but the last few things printed or anything with the word "PANIC" should give information as to what the problem is.

Another option is to try adding "noapic" as a boot option: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BootOptions by pressing F6 before starting the session.

I have a suspicion that this may be related to how the system uses RAID (or fakes it). Feel free to call me at (503) 383-1047 (if I'm unavailable it will go to message, and anyone who has an offensive call will have their number published into a bad chat room saying I'm a 15/f looking for a good time)

Kristopher,

OK thanks I appreciate the offer very much, I will most likely call you.

I tried your suggestion, ans selected (it puts an x next to the selection) the noapic and the same happened,

I managed to identify two subsequent screens, the first one (filled the whole page) just had many different messages..I quickly scanned them and they all seemed to be OK.

However the next screen which also filled the entire monitor displayed (again its too fast to really write carefully) said something like:

I/0 error .........1413668

this same line was displayed multiple times down the screen and a few seconds later the screen just went dark....in other words the monitor had a signal coming in but there was no visible image or text on the screen.

I would be more than happy to take a digital photograph and send it or post it..but am unsure of how to do that on this board.

cheers.

Feel free to call me, there are some various things (key combinations, and trying to get to a command line) we can troubleshoot over the phone. I can't guarantee anything, but I'll try my best.

Attempted to install UNuntu on refurbished HP Workstation w/new drive and no operating system using universal installer from USB stick. Failed several times and I am not sure I downloaded the proper software. I am a newbie and knowledge is out of date or forgotten for command prompts. Please advise if you can. I want to use this operating system BBAAAADDDLLYY. :)
